COLD CRUSHING AGAIN DJ Tony Tone Cold Crush Brothers Interview Let me start by saying that even though
this is called an interview, during the course of the Telephone Conversation
both Tone and Myself would just break from the script and simply converse
about Life, Culture and Hip Hop. The Original DJ Tony Tone, DJ Charlie
Chase (#1 Puerto Rican DJ), Grand Master Caz, Supreme EZ AD, the Late
Money Ray (who died of cancer Aug 24, 2002) RIP, Almighty Kay Gee, J
D L and Busy Bee 2. How did you'll get together? Basically I (DJ Tony Tone) ran wit this crew called the Funky 4, DJ Charlie Chase used to flow wit a Latin Group called Tom & Jerry, Grand Master Caz was wit the "Mighty " Force, Supreme EZ AD was part of the Salom Brothers, and J Del and Busy Bee would just Float around the Circuit and Keep Busy. As Tony told me, It was back in 78 and The Sugar Hill Gang had just come off wit a Hit Record. Just Prior to that Hit Record, we all used to do our little tours and run the circuit. Thru all these venues we came to know 1 another from Performing. When Sugar Hills Hit Dropped, their Record Company took Sugar on Tour and every1 else stayed home, that's when Tone and the Rest of the Boys got together to form the COLD CRUSH BROTHERS and Cut a Record wit Enjoy records. All The Cold Crush Brothers still reside in the Bronx and keep in touch on a regular Basis. As this has been well documented… It is generally known The Cold Crush Brothers Introduced the B-Boy Look and Style to Hip Hop. Before the CC Brothers cats wore corny tight jeans, boots, whack jackets, basically no style. CC came thru wit the Permanent Crease, Phat Kicks wit Phat Laces and lets not forget the Belt Buckles and the Hats. Even Run DMC has been known to say they where largely inspired by CC Brothers. When I asked Tone if he ever thought
Hip Hop would ever take it this Far he replied: "Cold Crush knew
in all our Hearts and believed Hip Hop was gonna Last". Yes! People,
there were Haters Back Then Too, yet they just did what felt right to
them for the simple love of the Music, This New Music that was Just
Starting to Move a Generation. Hip Hop Before the Lime Light. Battles @ The Audobon was part of the regular circuit. Six different crews, every1 had to bring there own Sound Systems & Set up, thing could get crazy. 1 time, Tone and the Boyz were running late. As the group before them was getting ready to finish their set Tone Rushes the Stage to get a early jump on the Set Up… All along the rest of the Cold Crush drillin him like, " are U ready yet, we gonna miss our set… Hurry up". Tone in a calm Voice as to reassure his Boyz tells them, "Just start, don't worry about me, I'll have it set up in time, just Start…” As they begin the set, Tone gets the Shit Shocked out of him while holding amp wires and what not, but the Show went on. "For the Love of Hip Hop” DJ Tony Tone. Hip Hop Today "The Original" DJ Tony Tone Tone has a Thriving Business wit current production work for other cats as well as Running his own Production Company called Tony Crush Enterprise. U can peep it @ Tonycrush.com. Tone is also working wit his very own stable of new Artist. Ms. Mercilus is a young female rapper in her 20,s and related to non-other that Uncle L (She's LL Cool J's cousin). She's coming out soon. Avian Nam is another protégé who sounds like a combo between Busta, Redman and Ol' Dirty (or as he wants to be called now "Ol' Dirt McGirt"), plus he sings his own hooks. Danny D. (Who has worked wit Alicia Keys) works and DJ's for Tones Production Company, Tonycrush.com. Future of The Funk Tone along wit his Cold Crush Brothers have embarked in setting up a Satellite Video Station. (Ready to Air this summer, come back to Legacy for Updates) For those who have ever seen The Box, music video, it will have that kind of operation where U can call in and Vote for your favorite video. The Catalog promises to Large and Covering Hip Hop from Beginning to the Latest Videos. Peeps like Chuck D and Zulu Beats are down wit it, so U knows it's got the support, plus it's global so peeps get a chance to present their Videos on a Global Basis. He told me that all type of videos would be played "like from Wutangs "Protect your Neck" shot in 8mm, to P Diddys "Ultra Bling Bling Videos", They’ll all get play, it's up to the Peeps viewing to keep the Videos On. From an Indy’s point of view this my become a Great Equalizer for those that choose not to take the normal route. Global Exposure on your First Joint Can Be Huge!!!!!! Words from Solo Never 1 to be Star Struck, Tone came across like a regular Cat wit nothin more than a Pure Passion for Hip Hop, on several Levels. Homeboy was Humble and never ever claimed to be owed anything from a culture he helped create, but insisted we should always embrace our History. Tone put me on to this Music Museum in Seattle called Emplive… Goto this link http://emplive.com/flash/hiphop/index.html Goto to year 79 on the time line click on the Cold Crush Brothers Flyer and watch the Video… Now this is True Hip Hop, right From The Source.
At times it felt like I was talking to my boy of over20 years as oppossed to A Rap Legend of over 20 years, he was just that Kool. Before I ended our conversation I wanted to let him know I really appreciated the time he took out to talk, plus that I would be hittin him up in 3 months to see what else is Popping.
Thanks for the interview Tone… I'll be in Touch Solo1 Legacy
